Felted Seagull on a Rock
I love seagulls; plump and soft looking, with hues that run seamlessly from light gray to dappled black and softened by cottony white. His yellow, greenish legs and yellow beak in matching tones give him a coordinated look.
When you step out of the car, hot and tired from your trip to the shore and first hear that seagull cry something inside me stirs with excitement when I hear that call. I don't ever hear the noise at home so that call means I am somewhere special.
Once a bold fellow swooped down and grabbed an unopened chip bag out of my beach bag! He was a big guy so he flew away with the whole package. Instead of feeling annoyed I was amused. "Good for him! If he can be so bold and strong, let him have it!"
This piece is especially appealing because it mixes up all kinds of natural materials. A rock from the beach, sand and bits of shells paired with wool is an unusual and fun grouping.
Materials: 1 round rock, wool (black and white), sand, shells (super tiny), 1 small black seed or bead (for eye), felting needle, Elmers glue, Hot glue, blue and white acrylic paint and a super strength magnet.

Paint the whole Rock blue, add a cloud or two.
Spread Elmers glue thickly at the base of the rock then press in sand and shells. Cover with more glue.

Felting is simply stabbing a special needle into a piece of special felting wool over and over and over. Check out the tutorials on felting on youtube if you are just a beginner.
For this project you will want to make a small oval piece (measure it to fit your rock) with an added circle on the end for a head and a triangular piece at the other end for a tail.

This is the shape of the wings, made in white felting with added black tips to the wings.
Add the beak and then black to the tail. Hot glue carefully onto the rock. I LOVE this guy!
Add a strong magnet to the back.

At the beach, I'm as happy as a seagull with a french fry! Please help to support our crafting habit by clicking on our links, Thanks!
Some may call the seagull a scallywag, but I love his optimism and free spirit!
This is the BEST book on felting out there (and I've seen them all). If you want to get started felting, you need to buy this. It covers everything from wool types, needles to numerous projects to try. It's the book I refer to the most. |
